The Highway Department provides maintenance, improvements and snow removal for approximately 133 miles of Town roads. During the winter season, under contract to Sullivan County, the Highway Department plows and/or sands approximately 30 miles of county roads; and maintains the department's equipment to accomplish the assigned tasks.
The Highway Department consists of 18 full time employees and 1 to 2 seasonal employees. The department has at its disposal approximately 40 pieces of equipment to accomplish its work. The amount and types of equipment used by the Highway Department is a result of the variety of types of work undertaken.
When bad weather is expected, the Highway Superintendent and Supervisors will be checking the roads. Our goal is to attend to the roads promptly. Occasionally, mechanical breakdowns and severe weather conditions do slow us down.
