  2. Compost Workshop

    September 11, 2020, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Outdoor Organics Management at the Mamakating Environmental Education Center! Even during a Pandemic approximately 40% of food is wasted in the United States. This means almost 30% of the solid waste we ship to distant landfills for expensive disposal consists of unwanted food and organic waste. There are ways to change this, beginning with smarter food production, preservation and distribution to food pantry donations to recovery of spent food as animal feed and compost. We will examine organics on a small scale at the Environmental Education Center and demonstrate principles of organics management that apply to households and businesses. Topics include: Global Food System Production & Distribution – My Lettuce is How Old?! Local vs. Long-Haul transport of food and waste Packaging: What’s best? Composting…A Local Solution! Backyard and Regional Compost Opportunities Properly-worn face masks and 6’ or greater outdoor social distancing is required at all times.
